As the trade dealine approaches and rumors of last second deals run rampant, Chicago Cubs management held a press conference to announce they had traded the much-maligned and highly paid trio of Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Pena and Carlos Zambrano to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a series of highly touted prospects. Cubs brass then broke into hysterical laughter as part of a cruel prank on Cubs fans.
“It was a difficult decision,” GM Jim Hendry said before snickering and pausing to regain his composure. “But we felt it was in their best interest to … I’m sorry, I can’t, I can’t even keep a straight face, you guys!”
Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts was the next to address media.
“I am very excited for the young talent we’ve been able to … one second give me a moment … yes, the young talent we were able to take on in this deal,” he said. “We didn’t even have to take on any of the players’ salaries.”
At that point, both Ricketts and Hendry laughed uproariously, pointing at the media and remarking, “They’re totally buying it! This is classic!”
Management ended the conference by announcing they planned on lowering ticket prices, before screaming, “Gotcha!” and giggling as they ran out of the room.
