The Bronx Bombers have announced a few more milestones that Derek Jeter can surpass this season, in an effort to motivate him to ditch his “normal-game” slumps and duplicate the stellar, 5 for 5 performance he pulled off when homering his way to 3,000 hits.
“Derek Jeter has a flair for the dramatic,” broadcaster John Sterling noted. “He may not hit it out like Curtis Granderson Grandy-man Can or Bernie Burn Baby Burn Williams. But no one rises to the occasion like Ol’ Number Two.”
Upon consulting with the Elias Sports Bureau, the Yankees uncovered that Jeter is just “three hits away from surpassing Wade Boggs on the all-time hits list” and four triples short of Rickey Henderson’s mark.
“Did you know the all-time record of 2-out base hits against an American League team located in Illinois is 17?” asked manager Joe Girardi. “And our leadoff batter is just two clutch hits away from surpassing that mark.”
Major League Baseball will issue commemorative baseballs to mark the moment when Derek Jeter will surpass the great Billy Herman and Vada Pinson to become the 65th hitter to reach 488 doubles.
“That’s a great milestone. So special,” said Brian Cashman. “When you think of doubles, you think of Billy Sherman and Viva Ponson. I know I do.”
Additionally, the Yankees have given 27-year-old Jeffrey Maier first row seats in the outfield section in anticipation of the Yankee shortstop’s next homerun, which will tie him with Ray Lankford and Earl Averill for 225th all-time.
