The Cubs hired Greg Maddux as a special assistant to GM Jim Hendry Monday, but it wasn’t all peachy news as the team announced the future Hall of Fame pitcher won’t be able to wear his familiar No. 31, which was retired in his honor last season.
Though Maddux’s job won’t require him to wear a jersey, he had hoped to wear it for special occasions. Not so, said Hendry.
“Sorry Greg, but we retired your number last year and no one can wear it, not even you,” said Hendry. “Can we interest you in 47? Scott Eyre and Aaron Heilman wore that last so there’s no chance we’ll be retiring it.”
