Robbie Gould today made headlines when he became the first kicker in NFL history to demand a trade.
“Yes, I know this is super-ballsy of me,” said Gould, who is also the first kicker to ever be franchised-tagged. “But I’m at the end of my career and am kind of like an old man who will say whatever is on his mind. What are they going to do, fire me?”
Gould’s popularity has perhaps never been higher, thanks both to his incredible 82-for-85 performance on field goals since being cut by the Bears in 2016 and the Bears’ terrible luck finding a replacement.
In the three seasons since Gould’s departure, the Bears have suited up approximately 15 kickers, each one worse than the last, culminating with Cody Parkey’s infamous “double-doink” in the playoffs earlier this year.
“I know I’m not supposed to say this due to tampering or whatever, but hell yeah we’d welcome Robbie back,” said Bears GM Ryan Pace. “As long as he doesn’t miss a critical field goal and then go on the ‘Today Show’ to whine about it, he’s okay in my book.”
