Matt Forte announced Monday that he was calling it quits on his career and signing a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Chicago Bears. It wasn’t reported, however, that the Bears traded a fourth-round pick to the Jets in order to complete the deal.
“When you can get a player of Matt Forte’s quality, you go out and do it,” said Bears GM Ryan Pace, who let Forte walk after the 2015 season, “Even though he’s announced he’s no longer going to play, getting Matt in exchange for a fourth-round pick is a steal.”
Pace reportedly offered a second-round pick for Forte, but Jets GM Mike Maccagnan felt sorry for Pace and countered with an asking price of the fourth-rounder.
“Can you believe that guy outbid himself? asked Pace. “What an idiot.”
