Joel Quenneville was calmly neutral (and remarkably repetitious) about Jonathon Toews’ injury on Sunday night’s game in Pittsburgh. Toews went down in the second period on shoulder-to-shoulder hit by the Penguins’ Brooks Orpik. Though Orpik was unharmed, Toews did not return to the ice for the third period.
“It’s nothing serious,” Quennville said as paramedics streamed past him with Toews on a gurney, clutching at his shoulder.
“We’re going to take it day by day and see where it puts us,” he said, moving out of the way as one screamed for an I.V. Another followed behind with a large cooler, possibly with Toews’ left arm inside. Who knows? This reporter certainly didn’t think to check, but is willing to speculate wildly.
“We’ll let the medical professionals do their jobs, and take it a day at a time” Quennville said, nodding as Toews groaned in agreement from inside the vehicle, shooting his coach a thumbs-up with a white-knuckled fist.
Does this mean the Blackhawks’ playoff dreams are over for the season, with both Kane and Toews out? Only their psychic, Madame Selena, can tell. Thus far, she has said the ‘Hawks should “take it step by step, and day by day, and see what the doctors say.” And to avoid the number 44, for whatever reason.
