Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford received a game misconduct for placing two lawn chairs and a garbage can in front of the net during Saturday night’s NHL Stadium Series game at Soldier Field.
The practice of placing objects in snow-shoveled parking spaces, called “dibs,” has been a decades-old practice of Chicagoans.
“No way am I letting anyone get in my spot,” the Hawks’ net minder told NBC’s Pierre McGuire. After NHL officials reviewed tape of Crawford cordoning off the area, referees called the misconduct.
“This is Chicago, for crying out loud,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “You got a bunch of dopes in a broom closet in Toronto making a decision from 800 miles away.”
Controversy aside, the game was suspended after the first period when Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation failed to show up at the stadium to plow the ice.
