The Cubs announced today they plan on having a special holiday and commemorative pin in honor of the team’s sweep of the White Sox in this year’s BP Cup Series.
This constitutes a change from previous celebrations, which usually marked events in Cub history that ended with a bitter defeat or horrendous failure, such as honoring the 1969 team as if it were the 1927 Yankees, and touting playoff disappointments in 1983, 1989, 1998, and 2003.
Team President Theo Epstein said it is a step in the right direction.
“We feel that honoring something which had a positive outcome will spur on the team to try to actually win something significant, like say, a World Series,” said Epstein. “I know it’s a small accomplishment, but we have to start somewhere.”
No date for the day has been set, but Epstein said he was thinking of replacing the day in the 2013 season that was already set aside for honoring the signing of Mark Prior out of college.
