In a frantic middle of the night phone call, Carlos Marmol begged GM Jed Hoyer to take him back to the Cubs after the reliever was cut by the Dodgers less than 24 hours after being traded.
“About 3:15 this morning, just as I finished checking the Japanese and Korean Leagues’ waiver wires, my cell phone rang,” Hoyer told Cubs.com. “I figured it might have been just another drunken rant from one of our players, but it was Marmol begging me to take him back to the team.”
Sensing Marmol was in total desperation, Hoyer said he was able to get the former Cubs closer to agree to return to the team taking no salary for the remainder of the season.
“Carlos was really doinked out, so I put the screws to him. Now that’s the new Cub way.”
Hoyer will meet today with Theo Epstein and Dale Sveum to discuss the situation.
“I’m not sure what we’ll do,” said Hoyer. “However, we might consider putting him in the current roles that Sean Camp and James Russell are filling, which is coming into a game in the seventh inning, loading the bases and giving up 5 or 6 runs.”
