After Andrew Shaw’s deflected goal in the third overtime of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins was waved off by officials, the two teams have continued battling throughout the night, where they just now have begun the 47th overtime period, smashing the previous record for longest NHL game.
During intermission following the 46th scoreless overtime period between the two original six franchises, a visibly exhausted Jonathan Toews told reporters, “You have to hand it to Boston, they’re giving us a hell of a game. We just have to go out and hope we can break through to get the victory. I’m so tired I think I’ve begun hallucinating.”
Duncan Keith, who leads both teams in ice time with a record-setting eleven hours, forty three minutes, and fifteen seconds, mirrored that sentiment somewhat, telling reporters shortly before leaving the locker room, “Please, no more. Make it stop. Make it all stop. Someone. Please.”
He was then abruptly interrupted by Toews, who ran past screaming incomprehensible gibberish and tearing at his beard in a temporary bout of madness.
