The Associated Press is reporting Major League Baseball will planning to expand its playoffs to include every team but the Pittsburgh Pirates beginning with the 2012 season.
The Pirates have not had a winning season since 1992 and during that time have lost 90-plus games eight times including 105 in 2010.
“We look at the current structure of eight teams being fair and that inviting every team to the postseason would be even more fair,” said Commissioner Bud Selig. “Well, every team with a realistic chance of ever being competitive, so that rules out the Pirates right there.”
Automatically uninviting Pittsburgh from the playoffs creates an uneven, 29-team postseason, but Selig said he and his cronies already have a plan in place to address this.
“We’re going to alternately disallow another perennially hapless franchise each season,” said Selig. “It could be Baltimore, Kansas City, Oakland, Cleveland, Toronto, Washington or Milwaukee. Take your pick really. It’s like shooting fish out of a barrel. Oh, that reminds me. Add the Marlins to that list.”
