A team of retired NBA all-stars, who played in the 1950s and ’60s, beat the Charlotte Bobcats in a postseason exhibition route, 153-74, at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The retirees outscored the Bobcats in the first quarter 48-7, never looking back. Twelve-time all-star, 75-year old Oscar Robertson, who averaged a double-double during the 1961-62 season while with the Cincinnati Royals, said, “If the Bobcats were in the league when in my day, I’d have averaged a quadruple-drupel-kadoopel.”
Ex-76ers’ guard Wali Jones dished out 14 assists with forward Al Bianchi making 8 of 9 from three-point range despite having hip replacement surgery last November. Bobcats’ rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who guarded Bianchi, stomped off the court in a temper tantrum in the third quarter after the former Syracuse Nat hit his sixth straight two-hand set shot.
Bulls’ favorite Bob Love, 71, scored 18 points. He played after securing an overnight pass from the Chicago retirement home where he lives.
“If Wilt (Chamberlain) wasn’t dead,” Love said about the late NBA-great, “we’d have put up 200 (points) tonight.”
In a post-game press conference, center Bill Russell, who hauled down 18 rebounds, told reporters that his team had fun “just kickin’ ass and takin’ names.”
