Despite manning what most consider to be a sinking ship, White Sox GM Kenny Williams signed former slugger Dave Winfield, age 58, to a deal which will pay the right-hander over $2 million for the final three weeks of the season. While Winfield’s future contributions are questionable, the move does complete a set for Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf. The South Siders have now given a contract to every member of the 1995 Indians.
“I believe in Mr. Winfield’s ability and wouldn’t sign him without thinking he will help us during a stretch run,” Williams said stoically. “Any rumors regarding Jerry’s fetish with the mid-’90s Cleveland franchise are simply that–rumors.”
The inking was the latest in a slue of contracts handed out since the Indians won 100 games in 1995. Some members Sox fans remember, including Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Jim Thome, Omar Vizquel, Manny Ramirez and Sandy Alomar, Jr. Others have been completely forgotten, such as Herbert Perry, Alan Embree, Paul Assenmacher and Tony Pena.
