The Bears today named Mike Tice, coach of their failed offensive line, to be offensive coordinator after Mike Martz stepped down earlier this week following a failed two-year run at the position.
“We considered bringing in some fresh blood,” said coach Lovie Smith. “But with Mike we know what we’re getting ourselves into because it’s a lot like what we just got ourselves out of.”
Smith said a personnel decision like this would normally be left to a GM, but the team didn’t want to wait until after Jerry Angelo’s replacement has been named to promote Tice because his services are highly sought after in the job market.
“There are a number of community colleges that have been asking about Mike for their head coaching vacancies, so we had to wrap him up quickly,” said Smith. “And if there’s anyone who can talent as well as we do, it’s a community college football program.”
