According to sources, Chicago Bears WR Earl Bennett will continue to wear his signature bright orange Nike cleats, despite fines and warnings from the league. According to Bennett, the fines, which amount to a total of $15,000 for the two games he’s worn them in, are “chump change.”
The fine for next week’s game against the Chargers will be $15,000, and $20,000 the following week against the Raiders. Beyond that, Bennett could face ejection from the game for failing to comply with league uniform policy.
Upon being informed of these reports, Bennett told reporters that it wasn’t a big deal to him.
“So for four games that’s what, like, 50 G’s? Look guys, this isn’t the NBA,” he said. “We won our lockout, remember? I got money to spend. And I mean, have you seen these things? They’re bright orange!”
Bennett declined to comment on the fact that he spends more on his shoes than 56% of American households earn in a year.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was in support of his teammate.
“I don’t care. Let him wear what he wants,” said Cutler. “If he can keep making his cuts and getting where he’s supposed to be, I’m all for it. Do you have any idea how nice it is to have a receiver in the right spot on a consistent basis? Maybe we should get Hester a pair of those orange cleats. Plus, they make him easier to find when I’m running for my life.”
Running back Matt Forte disagreed. According to his agent, “Matt feels that if anybody should be getting paid, it should be him, not the league disciplinarian. He feels slighted.”
