The Blackhawks again made off-season headlines by cutting another hero from their Stanley Cup-winning team Monday by parting ways with goalie Antti Niemi in favor of former Dallas Star Marty Turco. Fans were outraged by the move, which saved the Hawks more than $1 million in cap space and brought them an established premier netminder.
“This is complete crap,” said fan Kevin Fish. “Niemi was a hero last year. You can just go replacing him with a three-time all-star at a massive savings.”
While the core of the Stanley Cup champs will remain the same this season, Fish speaks for many fans when he expressed skepticism at GM Stan Bowman’s latest move.
“As soon as I spent $30 on a ‘Buff is Tuff’ shirt, they ditched him,” said Fish. “Now the $25 I spent on my ‘Niemi said NO!’ shirt is a waste too. What is this idiot Bowman trying to do to me? It’s like he doesn’t know anything about hockey.”
