Joe Maddon is at it again. With his pitching staff depleted following an epic five-game ALDS against the Nationals, the Cubs skipper has named infielder Javy Baez the NLCS Game 1 starting pitcher in Los Angeles Saturday night.

“Javy has a great arm and boundless energy,” said Maddon. “He’s definitely got more in the tank than most of the guys on our pitching staff at this point as well.”

Maddon added that he planned to throw Baez for at least four or five innings and then go back to Carl Edwards, Jr. for his sixth-straight playoff appearance.

“I just love having Carl in there for some reason,” said Maddon. “His success rate is about 50 percent lately, and that’s the best I can expect from anyone in our bullpen other than [closer Wade] Davis.”
