A bartender at John Barleycorn in Wrigleyville was fired today after trying to make World Series winning Cubs Manager Joe Maddon pay his own bartab. Local residents were shocked when Frank Johnson, a bartender at Barleycorn who began bartending when he moved to Chicago in 2014, placed a bill requesting $14.75 after Maddon ordered two Goose Island 312s.
“Unbelievable,” one Cubs fan told media sources. “I was stunned to see that. When Maddon placed his order and asked to close out his tab, I expected the bartender to say, ‘oh, no, Joe Maddon, your money is no good here’ or at least for him to pass the bill to one of the dozens of nearby patrons who were begging to buy the drinks on his behalf.”
Johnson told reporters he regretted trying to make Maddon pay for a drink after leading the Cubs to their first World Series in 108 years, and that he has been blacklisted from all Cubs bars, meaning he will try to seek employment from a White Sox bar like McNally’s.
When reached for comment, Maddon said, “I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but the beers were fine.”
