Chicago Bears head coach John Fox is still holding out hope he will have a competitive team on the field against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night. Fox refused to rule out running back Gale Sayers and linebacker Dick Butkus for the contest in Dallas.
Although both players retired over 40 years ago with catastrophic knee injuries, Fox hinted at the possibility they might be available.
“I know they both want to play. I am not a doctor, so I am not going to speculate, but with advances in medical technology, I can’t rule anyone out at this point,” Fox told reporters during a conference call Wednesday. “All I know is that any coach who thinks they might have to face Gale Sayers or Dick Butkus is going to have to design a game plan to stop them. Who knows what might happen.”
While Fox remained non-committal on the playing status of the two Bear legends, he sounded less optimistic about the progress of wide receiver Kevin White.
“He’s still learning the nuances of the position,” Fox explained. “Just yesterday, we taught him about what a referee does.”
