New Cubs skipper Joe Maddon brings with him a winning resume, but it’s his ability to carry on normal — and even interesting — conversations that has some players on the team truly flustered.
“The other day he made some joke about having a beer after the game, and I was like ‘wait, what do Bud Light and your RV have to do with baseball?” said Anthony Rizzo. “Dale [Sveum] and Ricky [Renteria] said conversations like that were for teammates.”
Javier Baez agreed.
“He actually flew down to Puerto Rico over the winter and we had dinner together,” said Baez. “Dinner! And the whole time he was telling me about his family and even asking about mine. It was so weird … almost like he’s a cool guy or something.”
