With the firing of manager Dale Sveum Monday Cubs President Theo Epstein said the club’s rebuilding was complete and that he expected more from the team he assembled than what he got in return.
“I have to say,” said Epstein. “With the talent we went out and got for him this year, this record is unacceptable.”
Epstein pointed out such acquisitions as Dioner Navarro and “that Baker guy.”
“I mean, it’s been a waste of my hard work,” Epstein said. “We’re trying to do something here, and by that I mean furnishing a complete team for the guy, and he can’t get the job done.”
Epstein said they will go in a new direction by hiring an accomplished manager to lead the team next year. Some candidates he mentioned were Jim Essian and, if he is still alive, Herman Franks.
