The switch from Lovie Smith to Marc Trestman as head coach of the Chicago Bears has brought with it sweeping changes, not the least of which is the fact the Bears no longer practice wasting timeouts.
“I asked coach Trestman when we were going to practice wasting timeouts and he gave me the weirdest look,” said quarterback Jay Cutler. “A couple times during drills, I’d call timeout, go to the sideline to cuss everyone out, then coach would ask me what the hell I was doing since there were 15 seconds left to run the play.”
Cutler’s favorite target last season, Brandon Marshall, agreed.
“I have some reservations about coach Trestman,” said Marshall. “He keeps talking about the science of the game. Man, science was my worst subject in school.”
