Cubs’ closer-in-waiting Kevin Gregg needs your help, so the organization, “Friends of Kevin Gregg,” which will hold a fund-raiser to offset travel costs for the pitcher’s Greyhound bus trip from Des Moines after he was recently called up from Triple-A Iowa.
Since pitching for the Cubs in 2009 when he finished the season with 23 very rocky saves to go along with a lofty 4.72 ERA, Gregg had failed in stints with the Orioles, Blue Jays and, most recently, the Dodgers.
“We can’t get out of the damn ninth inning,” skipper Dale Sveum ranted in a post-game press conference after Sean Camp blew a recent late-game save.
“Why not Kevin Gregg?” said Sveum. “And if he poops the bed, maybe we can dig up Mel Rojas or Kyle Farnsworth.”
The Gregg fund-raising event will take place at the Ting-A-Ling Lounge located near the ball park sometime next month.
A spokesperson for the group said, “We’ve already decided that after Kevin’s party, we’ll form a new group, ‘Friends of Kameron Loe,’” an organization to support the veteran pitcher signed by the ball club after being cut by the Mariners and now a member of the Cubs.
