The new conference being formed by Catholic schools presently in the Big East has mistakenly added The College of Cardinals to each school’s schedule in 2015.
The mistake is being blamed on a 25-year-old representative for the conference, who saw stories online about the selection of the new Pope. Incorrectly believing the gathering of several hundred Cardinals was an actual university, he included them in the the conference, which features DePaul and Marquette, as well as several other Catholic universities.
“He thought it would be a good way to add some revenue,” said Colin McCreary, spokesman for the conference. “He saw something about them being large land owners, or something like that, and got excited.”
Cardinal Giancarlo Alvioli said in a statement, “While it would be fun to join a conference like that, similar to Notre Dame, we’re more football orientated.”
