Nothing but a World Series championship will do for Tigers owner Mike Ilitch as he approaches the twilight of his storied career. The pizza mogul, and Red Wings and Tigers owner, is not quite content with just signing big name players like Anibal Sanchez in this off-season’s annual spending bender. He’s made a deal with Miami Marlins brass to buy their 2003 World Series Commissioner’s Trophy.
The Tigers said they would have a presentation ceremony complete with fireworks and champagne, but the sale is subject to approval by current commissioner, Bud Selig. Selig says he’s considering making the All-Star game play some role in the process.
“It wouldn’t be the worst thing I’ve done to the game,” said Selig.
