John Benson, a resident of Silver Spring, Maryland claims to have been a fan of the Washington Capitals before the team acquired star player Alex Ovechkin. Although it is hard to believe, the team did exist before Ovechkin, who locals affectionately refer to as “Ovie.” Ovechkin is known for his work ethic, commitment to excellent defensive play, and team mentality, and was long thought to actually have founded the team.
Benson was able to name five Capitals players from the 1990’s or earlier, an extremely rare feat for Caps fans. Moreover, he claimed to have actually attended Capitals games before the team played in the Verizon Center.
