Red Sox starter John Lackey went on the offensive Sunday night after receiving a text from a reporter just 30 minutes before his start against the Yankees that reminded the pitcher was a terrible person and mediocre pitcher he is.
“You have a problem with me leaving my wife while she’s battling cancer? Fine,” said Lackey, who gave up three runs in six innings and set Boston up for a dramatic 14-inning win over the Yankees. “But do you have to remind me my ERA is hovering over six all year? Jerk.”
Reportedly the text said “UR a jerk for leaving wife. She’s not Y you cn’t get any1 out this year. 6.41 ERA.” Lackey refused to identify the journalist who sent it, but said his name rhymed with “Stan Daughnessy.”
