Retired defenseman Chris Chelios will be honored by the Blackhawks tonight before they take the ice against the Red Wings, another of his former teams. In addition to honoring Chelios, the Blackhawks will add him to their third line for the foreseeable future.
Hawks GM Stan Bowman said he was inspired by the Cubs’ re-signing of Kerry Wood, another former local legend.
“Just like the Cubs, things are sputtering along for us this year,” said Bowman. “If they can go back to the well with Kerry Wood, there’s no reason we can’t do the same with Chris.”
Chelios is 48 and hasn’t played a full NHL season since 2007-2008. Bowman said he’s not concerned.
“I’m sure Chris is a little rusty, but he should fit right in with us,” said Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Most of our defensemen have been playing like stiffs this season anyway.”
