OCTOBER 4, 1989 — Cubs ace Greg Maddux has expressed confidence that he’ll be able to keep star first baseman Will Clark under wraps in the best-of-7 playoff series against the San Francisco Giants beginning today.
“I’ve got his number,” said the 23-year-old hurler. “Unless he can somehow figure out the pitches I’m going to throw ahead of time — which is impossible — I don’t see any reason we won’t be headed to the World Series.”
Manager Don Zimmer echoed the sentiments.
“This series is going to be a real breeze,” he said. “Between shutting down Clark and Mitch Williams as our closer, we should be good to go.”
